General Notarial Power of Attorney

A general notarial power of attorney allows a person (the principal) to authorize another person (the attorney-in-fact) to act on their behalf in various legal, financial, and personal matters. The power of attorney is authenticated by a licensed notary and constitutes a legally binding document. It is commonly used when a person is abroad, ill, or wants someone else to handle their affairs.

What is a general notarial power of attorney?

A general notarial power of attorney is a document prepared and authenticated under the Notaries Law, 1976 (חוק הנוטריונים, תשל״ו-1976), in which the principal authorizes the attorney-in-fact to perform actions on their behalf. The notary verifies that the principal appeared in person, identified themselves with an ID or passport, and understood the meaning and consequences of the power of attorney. A general POA grants broad authority — but can be limited to specific matters.
