Notarial Signature Authentication in Israel — When Required, Process & Fees
Notarial signature authentication is a procedure in which a notary certifies that a specific person signed a document in their presence, of their own free will, and after being identified with a valid ID. The notarial certification constitutes sufficient evidence in court without the need for additional proof — as established by Section 19 of the Notaries Law, 1976 (חוק הנוטריונים, תשל"ו-1976).
In this guide, you will find everything you need to know: when notarial signature authentication is required, what the process involves, how much it costs, and how to prepare.
When Is Notarial Signature Authentication Required?
Notarial signature authentication is required whenever a third party needs official proof that a signature on a document is genuine. Here are the most common situations:
Banks & Financial Institutions
- Power of attorney for managing a bank account
- High-value fund transfer documents
- Guarantee documents
- Mortgage deeds
Courts & Government Agencies
- Filing documents with the Registrar of Companies
- Signing affidavits for court proceedings
- Documents for the Tax Authority
- Signing real estate purchase agreements for the Land Registry (Tabu)
Documents for Use Abroad
- International contracts
- Documents for foreign countries — usually also requiring an apostille in addition to signature authentication
- Power of attorney for use abroad
- International corporate documents
Corporate Signatures
- Signing on behalf of a company (authorized signatories)
- Signing on behalf of an association or partnership
- Power of attorney from a company to a representative
How Does Notarial Signature Authentication Work?
The process is straightforward but requires physical presence:
Step 1 — Visit the notary's office. The signer must appear in person. Signature authentication cannot be performed without physical presence — this is a fundamental principle of the Notaries Law.
Step 2 — Identification. The notary identifies the signer using an ID card, passport, or other official identification. For corporate signatures — an authorized signatory certificate from the Registrar of Companies is also required.
Step 3 — Signing before the notary. The signer signs the document in the notary's presence. The notary verifies that the signature is made of free will and that the signer understands the content of the document.
Step 4 — Issuance of the notarial certificate. The notary attaches a signed and stamped certificate confirming the signer's identity and that the signature was made in their presence.
Notarial Signature Authentication Fees in Israel (2026)
Fees are set by the Notaries Regulations (Service Fees), 1978 (תקנות הנוטריונים (שכר שירותים), תשל"ט-1978) and are uniform nationwide. All prices are before VAT (18%):
Calculation examples:
- Single signatory = 197 ₪ + VAT = 232.46 ₪
- Two signatories on an agreement = 197 + 77 = 274 ₪ + VAT = 323.32 ₪
- Corporate signature (authorized signatory on behalf of a company) = 197 + 77 (authorization) = 274 ₪ + VAT = 323.32 ₪

Important: A notary is not permitted to charge more or less than the regulated fee. Deviation from the tariff is a disciplinary offense under Section 42(3) of the Notaries Law.
Documents to Bring
To ensure a smooth process, bring the following:
- Valid ID — Israeli ID card or valid passport
- The document to be signed — sign it only in the presence of the notary unless they have approved otherwise
- Authorized signatory certificate — if signing on behalf of a company (available from the Registrar of Companies website)
- Power of attorney — if signing on behalf of another person
Signature Authentication and Apostille
When a document signed in Israel needs to be used in a foreign country that is a member of the Hague Convention (1961), an apostille is required — an official stamp from the Ministry of Justice certifying the validity of the notarial certificate.
The process: Signature authentication by a notary -> Submit the document to the apostille department -> Receive the apostille stamp.
At BEITON & Co, we handle the entire process — from signature authentication to obtaining the apostille.
Frequently Asked Questions
Question: Can a notary authenticate a signature that was already signed outside their presence?
Answer: No. Under the Notaries Law, the signature must be made in the notary's presence. If you signed a document in advance, you will need to sign again before the notary.
Question: Do both spouses need to come together?
Answer: If both need to sign the same document — yes, both must appear before the notary. If only one is signing — only they need to come.
Question: How long does signature authentication take?
Answer: The process itself takes about 10-15 minutes. At BEITON & Co, you can book an appointment in advance for immediate service.
Question: Does a notarized signature expire?
Answer: The notarial certificate itself does not expire. However, the body requiring the authentication (bank, authority, foreign entity) may require a recent certificate — typically within 6 months of issuance.
Question: What is the difference between signature authentication and a notarial affidavit?
Answer: In signature authentication, the notary certifies that the signature was made in their presence. In a notarial affidavit, the notary also administers an oath regarding the truthfulness of the content. A false statement in an affidavit carries criminal liability.
Question: Can signature authentication be done remotely or online?
Answer: No. Israeli law requires physical presence before the notary. Signature authentication cannot be performed via Zoom, video call, or any other remote means.
