A notarial power of attorney (POA) is a legal document in which one person (the "principal") authorizes another (the "agent") to act on their behalf before banks, government agencies, the Land Registry (Tabu), and other bodies. Unlike a regular POA, a power of attorney signed before a notary constitutes sufficient evidence without the need for additional proof, as established by Section 19 of the Notaries Law, 1976 (חוק הנוטריונים, תשל"ו-1976).

Types of Notarial Power of Attorney
General Power of Attorney
Authorizes the agent to perform a wide range of actions on behalf of the principal — managing bank accounts, handling tax matters, signing documents, and more. Ideal for individuals living abroad who need someone to manage their affairs in Israel.
Real Estate Power of Attorney (Tabu)
A specific POA for real estate transactions — buying, selling, registering rights, or taking out a mortgage. The Land Registry offices (Tabu) accept only notarized powers of attorney. A regular POA will be rejected.
Irrevocable Power of Attorney
A POA that cannot be revoked without the consent of the agent. Common in real estate transactions — for example, a seller signs an irrevocable POA in favor of the buyer to ensure the transaction is registered even if the seller changes their mind.
Power of Attorney for Banking & Mortgages
Banks require a notarial POA for actions such as adding or removing authorized signatories, managing an account on behalf of someone who cannot visit the branch, or signing mortgage documents. The wording is usually dictated by the bank in advance.
Power of Attorney for Use Abroad
A POA intended for presentation to authorities abroad. In many cases, an apostille is also required — an international certification proving the Israeli notary is authorized to act.
When Is a Notarial Power of Attorney Required?
Not every POA needs to be notarized. Here are the situations where notarization is mandatory:
- Real estate transactions — any action at the Tabu on behalf of another person
- Banking transactions — most banks require a notarized POA
- Proceedings involving foreign entities — embassies, foreign authorities, courts abroad
- Irrevocable POA — notarization is required by law
- When the receiving body demands it — insurance companies, pension funds, etc.
Notarial Power of Attorney Fees in Israel (2026)
Fees are set by the Notaries Regulations (Service Fees), 1978 (תקנות הנוטריונים (שכר שירותים), תשל"ט-1978) and are uniform nationwide.

Required Documents
To obtain a notarial power of attorney, bring the following:
- Valid ID of the principal (the person granting the POA) — Israeli ID card with supplement, or passport
- Agent's details — full name and ID number
- POA wording — if the receiving body requires a specific format (e.g., a bank or the Tabu)
- Land Registry extract — if the POA relates to real estate
- Passport — if the POA is intended for use abroad
The agent does not need to be present at the signing.
Digital Process vs. In-Person Visit
